Vehicle Designer, Arts and Design Educator

John A. Frye has been sketching vehicles since he first picked up a crayon. His obsession with all things wheeled and propelled through space led to a path through Central Oregon Community College and Art Center College Design and into professional design of vehicles from toys to video games to film to real life transport at companies such as Activision, Boeing, HBO, Marvel, Hasbro, and is now principal designer at Honda. His love of drawing vehicles has led to decades of personal study in process, technique and design. John has extensive experience as an art and design educator and continues to develop published art education content.

Join John as he discusses how he blends digital and analog techniques to create vehicle design artworks that evoke a sense of handcrafted design media nostalgia. He describes how he leans into the powerful support of 3D and 2D digital applications such as Alias Autostudio, Gravity Sketch, Keyshot, Solidworks Visualize, and Photoshop CS6 to supplement traditional media like texture markers, ballpoint pens, gouache, and alcohol-based color dyes on paper. John's method of creation follows the logic of 'start messy, end clean' to ensure early-stage creative flow is uninhibited. He then progresses into a refined and carefully executed final image that displays a high level of precision, thought, and craftsmanship.
